AFKing after joining a random PUG when they start a mission is fun
Seriously though, I generaly just AFK wherever I am, but I don't do it for long, I'll log off if it's too long. (I will, not the auto-log off)

There is a difference between afk *away from keyboard* and being in an outpost.
I hardly ever go afk for a long time, I just close the client and log back in later.
It happens more often that I was doing something and need to take a short break or take care of something.
Then I usually leave my monk (or other character) in the outpost I just entered.
I know a lot of people do that and it's also one of the reasons some popular outposts have monks (and other professions) standing afk.
In Olafstead they leave the group when finished and go for lunch or whatever.
Since they will continue to farm norn-points after it they will just stay in the outpost.
When I am not playing anymore but still chatting with people I move to the guild hall.

Usually, I'll just log off. If I wanna stay logged in for some reason, I'll go to guild hall.
(That is, if the afk is more than a few minutes. If it's only a few minutes, I'll stay wherever I am.)

When i want to go afk, i leave myself wherever i am at the time. No need to map somewhere exciting. It's a simple, yet effective technique.

If I need to go afk, I go afk. I don't really consider what outpost or zone I happen to be in at the moment. If people want to send blind, random invites, then get mad because I'm away, that's up to them. Chances are I'm not even in the outpost for the same reason they are.

Maybe they don't want to group with you - could it be?
I go there on a monk, while vanquishing (possible with r10 title on), selling junk to merchant, buying ID kits, perhaps taking a quest for the book....
Guess what, before I load in I get 6 invites into a group.
And, there might be legit players, who are only doing the storyline part, and don't want to join. Or perhaps they're searching for someone to join them for mission or dungeon. Or perhaps they've been farming for hours, and need a break.
It's not that monks afk - you just don't notice the others.

While working on my cartography a few weeks ago I walked in on 4 people (I think they were guildies) and was promptly called an "ugly mesmer" before they left.

I just got back from being AFK, actually . Didn't move from my spawn spot in Yahnur Market (was about to vanquish, but needed food before).
In general I AFK wherever I am when I need to, but if I really don't wanna be bothered I move to an explorable and put my status on DND - doesn't happen often, as I'm always expecting a PM or something >_>;;. Not too long back I came back from grabbing a snack with a guy who was too impatient and PMed me even though I was on away and he was expecting me to reply -_-;;. When I told him to pay attention to status, he basically didn't care, said it was too important and got slightly mad at me because I didn't have some item... that I sold months BEFORE I knew him anyways >_> (which in turn got me pissed, watch other people's status, gawd!).
My fav spots for AFKing used to be in the hole at the stairs of the Meditation guild hall and the (probably) first res shrine in the Tormented GH. Now I went back to my old ways of AFKing behind the Xunlai chest, usually doing /dance or something.
